Growing up on a Farm:

I grew up on a cattle ranch and wheat farm in North Dakota, where we worked hard and saved what we could. That experience influenced some of the principles of how I look at investing: To be successful, you simply spend less than you earn. And bringing in a big harvest isn’t the result of a big, one-time decision you make—it’s the result of the many wise and prudent decisions you make along the way.

Serving in the Army:

A veteran of the US Army, I served in the Gulf War. I believe the stresses I experienced in that environment prepared me well for when stresses happen in the market. As a result of my military training and service, I feel I’m more even-keeled and better able to keep a long-term view as opposed to reacting to short-term movements in the market and possibly making rushed decisions.

Working the Trade Desk:

I started taking trades in the late 90s until late 2000 after the dot-com bubble had burst. In the beginning, people just couldn’t wait to get in, and how they were afraid they were missing out, saying, “Hurry up! Hurry up! I gotta buy this!” … to just a few months later where some of those same people were scared and couldn’t wait to get out. That experience really cemented my philosophy around a less-emotional and more data-driven long-term approach to investing and financial planning.

12 Years in a Compliance Role and 7 Years in a Supervisory Role:

19 years, working in both a compliance role (2000-2012) and a supervisory role (2012-2019), I’ve seen many offices and how they operate. The knowledge I’ve gained in this area has informed how—and why—I decided to set up my office the way I did: Therefore, I prefer a more comprehensive, personal, and service-oriented approach. I prefer to conduct periodic, ongoing client visits to give me a solid understanding of my clients’ needs and goals. I can operate on a fee or commission basis, depending what works best for each individual. It’s important to me that my clients know I’m making recommendations based on what I believe is in their best interest as a fiduciary.

I currently have Series 7, 24, 63 and 65 registrations as well as my resident WI Life / Health insurance licenses.

Personal:

When not working, I enjoy spending time with my beautiful wife, Angela, and wonderful children, Zoe, Alexander, and Gianna. I also love time outdoors, hunting and sports.

Ryan’s career in financial planning began at Ameriprise Financial, where he spent seven years developing his personable approach,  eventually becoming a specialist in working with clients who no longer had advisors. During this time, Ryan grew a diverse national client base by working directly with investors of all personal and socioeconomic backgrounds, helping them navigate an uncertain post-recession market. which provided him immensely valuable experience and confidence he uses to guide his clients today. Since leaving Ameriprise, he has been a part of RiverLink Financial Advisor's team, working independently through Questar Capital and now Osaic for nearly three years. His commitment to improving clients’ lives of via a proactive approach focused on individual attention and relationship building, enables a deep understanding of client goals and building of trust that is reflected by the number of clients who have remained with him since 2011. Ryan works tirelessly to provide responsive ongoing support and to implement recommendations that accomplish his client’s goals in a way that makes complex topics seem simple and easy to understand.

Ryan’s lifelong passion for financial planning began at an early age. One of his fondest memories as a child was looking at the financial section of a newspaper with his grandfather, when they would page through stock values to observe their changes from the previous day and discuss the impact on his grandfather’s investments. The practice instilled Ryan’s appreciation for changing market dynamics, by uncovering the opportunities change can present, along with developing a keen eye for value. While a lot has happened since those early days with his grandfather, Ryan’s goal of uncovering value in uncertain times has remained the same when working with his clients. In the coming years, there will be changes in the domestic and global economy, technology, politics, taxes, and estate planning that will affect financial planning goals. In order to cut through the uncertainty and educate clients on how they’ll be impacted by market changes, Ryan and the RiverLink team use the latest technology and work closely as a team to share the latest information, identify potential opportunities, and provide the most appropriate recommendations based on each client's personal risk tolerance. Ryan’s commitment to keeping pace with change, maintaining nimble investment strategies, and individualized planning allows his clients to be at ease about their finances and focus on what is most important to them.
