Growing up on a Farm:
I grew up on a cattle ranch and wheat farm in North Dakota, where we worked hard and saved what we could. That experience influenced some of the principles of how I look at investing: To be successful, you simply spend less than you earn. And bringing in a big harvest isn’t the result of a big, one-time decision you make—it’s the result of the many wise and prudent decisions you make along the way.
Serving in the Army:
A veteran of the US Army, I served in the Gulf War. I believe the stresses I experienced in that environment prepared me well for when stresses happen in the market. As a result of my military training and service, I feel I’m more even-keeled and better able to keep a long-term view as opposed to reacting to short-term movements in the market and possibly making rushed decisions.
Working the Trade Desk:
I started taking trades in the late 90s until late 2000 after the dot-com bubble had burst. In the beginning, people just couldn’t wait to get in, and how they were afraid they were missing out, saying, “Hurry up! Hurry up! I gotta buy this!” … to just a few months later where some of those same people were scared and couldn’t wait to get out. That experience really cemented my philosophy around a less-emotional and more data-driven long-term approach to investing and financial planning.
12 Years in a Compliance Role and 7 Years in a Supervisory Role:
19 years, working in both a compliance role (2000-2012) and a supervisory role (2012-2019), I’ve seen many offices and how they operate. The knowledge I’ve gained in this area has informed how—and why—I decided to set up my office the way I did:
Therefore, I prefer a more comprehensive, personal, and service-oriented approach. I prefer to conduct quarterly, ongoing client visits to give me a solid understanding of my clients’ needs and goals. I can operate on a fee or commission basis, depending what works best for each individual. It’s important to me that my clients know I’m making recommendations based on what I believe is in their best interest.
Personal:
When not working, I enjoy spending time with my beautiful wife, Angela, and wonderful children, Zoe, Alexander, and Gianna. I also love time outdoors, hunting and sports.
